Abstract
The purpose of this study was to enhance our understanding of the loneliness experience of Dosshouse residents. Interviews were conducted with individuals between the ages of 50-70, who have lived, at minimum, one year in the Dosshouse. Data was analyzed using the Giorgian method of phenomenological analysis. The 734 meaning units identified by the data were summarized into 71 meaning units which were then subsequently divided into 9 categories. Results indicated that family disorganization associated with homelessness is an important factor in the loneliness experience among Dosshouse residents. Remorse, longing for family, emptiness, sorrow and loneliness were the predominant feelings associated with this population, and many reported that experiences of suicidal ideations were highly related with these feelings. Despite reports of severe loneliness, the participants interviewed reported hope for a better life situation. Counseling implications, future research directions and recommendations are discussed.
